Former MISC ceo to head Petronas

Kuala Lumpur: Datuk Shamsul Azhar Abbas, former MISC ceo, has been appointed as president and ceo of Malaysian national oil and gas company Petronas. Shamsul will replace Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Marican in the top post at Petronas from February 10. Petronas is Malaysia’s largest company and its interests include a majority stake in MISC.

Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said he was confident Shamsul, 57, possessed the qualification, authority and experience to bring continued success to Petronas. Shamsul joined Petronas in 1974 and was ceo of MISC from 2004 until 2009. An industry executive who worked with Datuk Shamsul at MISC praised the appointment describing him as a “world class leader”.
